Thanksgiving fire safety tips for your family & friends!

Holiday parties and family gatherings that were postponed last year due to COVID-19 concerns are great to look forward to this year. Plan this season to help ensure it is safe and fire-free for your family and friends. The number of house fires between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays peak to an average of 470 fires per day.

This season brings chilly temperatures and vibrant colors. The following are some fundamental cooking safety recommendations for homeowners to consider:

• Never leave food unattended on a range or cooktop. Sixty-one percent of home cooking fires start on an oven or cooktop.
• Never cook on the stovetop when you are sleepy or intoxicated.
• When cooking, use a timer to remind yourself that you are cooking.
• Keep anything flammable away from the stovetop. These items include potholders, wooden utensils, towels, curtains, and food wrappings.
• If you must leave the kitchen for any time, turn off the stove.

A few fall decoration safety tips to follow:

• Dry flowers and cornstalks should be kept away from open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs and heaters
• Keep emergency escape routes and exits clear of decorations
• Teach children fire safety
• Use extreme caution when using real candles in your fall decorations
